Entering it 26th year, the Dolly Parade will literally take over downtown Pigeon Forge on May 6th! All down the parkway there will be festivities, sales and people celebrating an icon of our area and having an all around good time. Starting at 6:00 PM to who knows when, you can expect everything from entertainers to marching bands to the lead lady herself. All you need to do is show up! I guarantee you it’ll be hard to miss and easy to find a spot. Highly recommended! We’ll do another reminder later on in the week to ensure you have your plans all sorted out.
Also, in other recent news, the Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show has been open and is the new thing in town to check out! While we haven’t been to it yet, we’ll let you know how it is as soon as we can!

Well, Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow, so an early Spring is supposedly on the way. That means good for you and any trips to the Smokies you may have planned! Going in the winter is the best time to visit all of the sites with little of the traffic you come to know and “love” from the area. Go for it!
The Winter Heritage Festival is happening this weekend in Townsend, which you can read all about in one of our previous posts. For those interested in Appalachia in the Winter and how we survived those long ago, look no further!
The one downside to these “off season” months is the lack of major events, but many of your favorite sites will still be open and ready for entertainment. The Titanic Exhibit, countless dinner and theater shows, the shopping? All there! Dollywood is currently closed until March 26, but there’s still plenty to do in the region. So have a little fun with the lack of trip stress!

Finally, Spring has arrived in the Great Smoky Mountains. With the nice weekend weather that we have had lately, the crowds are returning to the mountains seeking relief from the long cold winter. I was so happy to see that the sign at Willow Brook Lodge in Pigeon Forge read 77 degrees yesterday. The ten day forcast has our weather in the middle 60′s and above.
Pigeon Forge is ramping up for the upcoming tourist season, with new attractions, new shows and more. Wonderworks is now offering the Wonders of Magic featuring Terry Evanswood. The Smoky Mountain Theatre has the Temptations Revue with starring Nate Evans, who began performing with original vocalists David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards and Eddie Kendricks. Dollywood is opening Adventure Mountain this season. The Miracle Theater is present “Joseph and the Amazing Technocolor Dreamcoat” starring American Idol Finalist Melinda Doolittle. And on your drive in to Pigeon Forge, you will notice that we now have the Titantic.
It’s going to be a great season here in the Smoky Mountains. Here’s a few pictures of Spring preperations, and as you can tell, the camels in front of the Miracle Theatre really enjoyed the warm weather.
Smokies Celebrates Public Lands Day
Press Release:
National Park Service
September 22, 2009
The National Park Service is inviting America to join in a day of service and celebration on Saturday, September 26, during Public Lands Day to help make America’s Best Idea—the national parks—even better. As part of the event, Great Smoky Mountains National Park will present a sneak preview of a new Ken Burns documentary and participate in a volunteer community service project in cooperation with the Keep Sevier Beautiful Roads and Rivers Day Fall Clean Up.
A short, 26-minute excerpt from the National Parks: America’s Best Idea documentary series, sponsored by the National Park Service and National Park Foundation, is scheduled for two showings on Saturday, September 26, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Sugarlands Visitor Center, near Gatlinburg, Tenn. This showing is a prelude to the six-part, 12-hour series which will begin airing on PBS stations nationwide on Sunday, September 27. The Burns documentary includes a Smokies segment in which local icons Horace Kephart and George Masa are featured prominently. Together, Kephart, a famed author and outdoorsman, and Masa, a photographer and avid hiker, played important roles in raising support for the Park’s creation.
“We are excited that the Smokies is part of the documentary film which coincides with the Park’s 75th Anniversary. The project traces the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follows its evolution for nearly 150 years and is an excellent opportunity for Americans to reflect on the significance and value of the National Park System,” said Park Superintendent Dale Ditmanson.
As part of the Keep Sevier Beautiful Roads and Rivers Day, the national park is looking for volunteers to participate in a litter clean up along the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Spur between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Registration for interested volunteers begins at 9 a.m. at the Gatlinburg Spur Welcome Center where volunteers will be provided work gloves, water and trash bags and assigned sections of the Spur which runs parallel to the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River. Individuals should be prepared to walk along the sloping banks of the river collecting trash and debris. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes and long pants for scrambling down the banks. Individuals under 18 are required to be accompanied by adult. The national park is one of several places that Keep Sevier Beautiful is sponsoring in Sevier County so that people can help to make their community a better place to live and visit. For more information call the Keep Sevier Beautiful office at 865-774-6677.
